Far from a watered-down version of the Law of Moses, Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount is effectively a “raising of the bar.” The discipleship standards of Jesus are higher than the Law in terms of the fact that the emphasis is placed not only on the actual conduct but also on the motives behind the deeds. It is in this sense that the Lord says, “Except your righteousness exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no wise enter into the kingdom.”
I think you will agree that living the Sermon on the Mount is, indeed, a tall order. It is not easy to be a Christian. But the Lord promises his Divine resources to those who ask, seek, and knock.
